HISTORY
GITAMEIT is a fledgling initiative begun in September
2003 based in Yangon, Myanmar with associates in
Mandalay which aims to encourage creative thought
in music performance and training, offer exposure to
different musical forms for Burmese musicians and
audiences, and reduce isolation by bringing in performers/teachers from
abroad for community
performances.
The word "Gita" and "Meit" mean "music"
and
"friendship" in Pali and Burmese with corresponding
meanings in Thai (KITAMIT is a related initiative in
Thailand, based at Payap University). For the past five years,a group
of musicians and music lovers in
Thailand and Myanmar/Burma organized workshops,
performaces in Bangkok, Chiangmai, Mandalay and
Yangon to expand regional cultural awareness through development of connections
among musicians in those cities and other countries. Our
musical focus is holistic and inclusive of Southeast
Asian genres in addition to Western classical,
contemporary and jazz forms. Our concerts in
Myanmar/Burma have had up to 2000 people in
attendance.
GITAMEIT SCHOOL , based in Taumbwe- on a major
bus-line and in a central location started offering
classes in November 2003. We are starting with
foundation classes in Western music theory,
performance and interpretation and also offer a
listening course that includes genres of music
unavailable to listeners here.
